Betting Odds: Zach Johnson, Heavy Favorite at John Deere Classic

This week’s Johne Deere Classic falls during a unique time, as it is being played after an intense, compact schedule, and right in the middle of golf’s Olympic debut in the modern era. The field has taken a hit because of this, as many of the game’s best are either in Rio or taking some time off after a hectic June and July.

Zach Johnson, the clear- cut favorite at 7/1, is the only player in the field ranked in the top-25 of the world golf rankings. He has certainly earned his position as the man to beat, finishing 3, 2, 2, 1, and 3 in his last five starts.

Steve Stricker is a three-peat winner at TPC Deere, winning in 2009, 2010, and 2011, and despite only playing a limited schedule this year, he has played well when he’s taken the course. Anything can happen when you can putt as good as Steve Stricker does, which is why he is 12/1 odds to win.

With what may be a testament to the relatively weak field, newly turned pro Jon Rahm comes in at 18/1 odds, which may seem surprising given his lack of experience compared to most guys in the field. Rahm has shown he can still bring it despite only having a few starts under his belt, as he has made some noise and caught some attention at most of those events, including a near win at AT&T National.

Jerry Kelly came out of nowhere to almost make a playoff last week at the Travelers, so if he keeps that form up he may be worth taking a shot at 40/1.

Here’s a look at the rest of the odds for this week.
